A Gentle Invitation to Something Brutal and Beautiful

I don’t love selling. Never have. I’d rather write for weeks in the dark than shove a book into someone’s hand and say, “Hey, buy this. Please.”

But I also didn’t spend years building Lucardia to watch it get buried beneath a mountain of AI-generated fantasy and flavor-of-the-month Kindle reads. So here I am, breaking my own rules, telling you why now might be the moment if you’ve ever thought about giving my books.

Because the stories I’m telling aren’t mass-produced. They aren’t tropes wrapped in fancy jackets. They’re brutal, honest, unsettling, and sometimes tender in the way a bruise is tender—the kind that lingers after something real hits you.

Lucardia is a world where gods lie, where light is just another kind of weapon, and where broken people try to make sense of the things they’ve done. I don’t write perfect heroes. I don’t write clean endings. I write characters clawing their way toward truth in a world that punishes them for their efforts.

If you’ve been burned by fantasy that promises depth but never delivers, give my books a shot. It may not be an easy read. But it’s honest. It’s alive. And it has something to say.

I won’t lie; sales have been dismal this year. I know I’m not the only one feeling this. Lately, many of us writing speculative fiction—especially the darker, stranger stuff—are watching sales crawl. Readers are overwhelmed. Algorithms are gamed. There’s so much noise and not enough signal. The world is unraveling, and you may be struggling to hold on. I get it, believe me, I do. These days, it is hard for me to sit down and write.

But I do, every day, in the hopes that my work can transport you away from it all. If you’re looking for a story with soul—something that lingers and means something—I’ve got a world for you.

Two of my e-books are currently just $0.99 (until March 31). There are no gimmicks, no catch, just a door cracked open.

If you’ve been waiting—don’t.

If you want the beginning of a sweeping epic, start with Dawn of the Lightbearer (UK: https://amzn.to/4hXIOpY).

If you’re curious about where my journey began, start with the Island of Stone (UK: https://amzn.to/41PdUex).

You can find the rest of my works here!

Either way, the world will be waiting for you. Thanks for reading.

Cheers!

Scott Austin Tirrell loves dark speculative fiction, conjuring isolated worlds where ancient mysteries, the raw power of nature, and the paranormal entwine. His work is steeped in the arcane, drawing from the forgotten corners of history and the unsettling grasp of the supernatural. With a style shaped by Clive Barker, Frank Herbert, and Joe Abercrombie, he crafts narratives that pull ordinary, flawed souls into the extraordinary, where reality frays, shadows lengthen, and the unknown whispers from the void. He has self-published eight books, with Koen set to come out in 2025 under Grendel Press. Residing in Boston with his wife, he draws inspiration from the region’s haunted past and spectral folklore. Scott invites readers to step beyond the veil and into his worlds, where every tale descends into the deeper, darker truths of the human condition.

  1. Self-promotion is the hardest thing. I get it. I do a horrible job of it with my novels and also the jewelry that my husband and I make. I don’t read as much fantasy as I used to, but I will check them out. Honest.
