Check out Koen’s book trailer!

I spent the last three days putting together a book trailer for Koen, and I’m pretty proud of it. You can find it here (give it a like and leave a comment). It’s not perfect, and if I had the time and resources, I could do better, but I created this one entirely from free, open-source tools and content. It takes more effort weeding through what’s free, but I’m doing this on a budget. Paying someone to make this ad for me (without being cheated) would have cost nearly a thousand dollars. If I used the paid subscription versions of the tools and bought licenses for the perfect pictures, art, videos, gifs, and sounds (including text-to-voice), it would cost more than that- I estimate about $1,200.

Sometimes, I wish I could just throw money at my books. It would certainly save me time. However, doing them on a budget has forced me to learn all sorts of new and exciting skills, and my products have become increasingly more professional. I am not an expert in any sense of the word, and the professionals can probably pick my work apart, but it gets the job done. Koen is available for preorder and will be released on September 22, 2024!

Cheers!

Scott Austin Tirrell loves dark speculative fiction, conjuring isolated worlds where ancient mysteries, the raw power of nature, and the paranormal entwine. His work is steeped in the arcane, drawing from the forgotten corners of history and the unsettling grasp of the supernatural. With a style shaped by Clive Barker, Frank Herbert, and Joe Abercrombie, he crafts narratives that pull ordinary, flawed souls into the extraordinary, where reality frays, shadows lengthen, and the unknown whispers from the void. He has self-published eight books, with Koen set to come out in 2025 under Grendel Press. Residing in Boston with his wife, he draws inspiration from the region’s haunted past and spectral folklore. Scott invites readers to step beyond the veil and into his worlds, where every tale descends into the deeper, darker truths of the human condition.

  1. I’ve never made a book trailer, but like you, I would be using free resources. It’s true, we could throw so much money at our writing, but I think it’s important to be very choosey in that aspect of being an author. I look forward to seeing what the next couple of months hold for you and your book release!

  2. Excellent job!

Just think how many books you have to sell only to break even if you paid for this! I guess that’s everyone’s dilemma – go BIG on promo and hope to sell squillions if copies or take time and possibly a lot of grief and DIY.
