The Novice of Thanatos – A Dark Journey Begins March 7th, 2025

In just a few days, the gates will open. The dead will call, the past will stir, and a young novice will take his first steps into the dark corridors of a world few dare to tread.

On March 7th, The Novice of Thanatos releases, and with it, a descent into the shadowed halls of the Order of Thanatos—a secretive brotherhood tasked with guiding souls beyond the Threshold. This is a story unlike any I’ve written before. It is darker, more intimate, and filled with secrets that will shake the very foundation of what Mishal has been taught to believe.

What Awaits Beyond the Gates?

This is not a story of grand battles or political machinations. This is a story of death—of the unseen forces that lurk beyond the veil, of the lies that have been told for centuries, and of one boy thrust into the center of it all. The Novice of Thanatos is my most immersive and haunting novel yet, and if you are drawn to the macabre, the philosophical, and the unsettling, then this book is for you.

Mishal was never meant to walk this path. He is young, untested, and burdened with a past that marks him as an outsider among the Order. His journey is one of discovery, but the truth is not always kind. The Order teaches that the dead must cross willingly—but what if they do not? What if the Threshold is not a passage to peace, but something else entirely?

The Darkest Story I Have Ever Written

I have always explored themes of mortality, power, and faith in my books, but The Novice of Thanatos strips these themes to their rawest form. It is a slow-burning horror, a mystery woven into the very fabric of Lucardia, and a psychological descent into the heart of a boy who does not yet know what he is becoming.

If Absolution of the Morning Star was an epic of war and fate, The Novice of Thanatos is its shadow—a whispered secret in the dark, a slow realization that the world is not what it seems.

Why This Book Matters

The Novice of Thanatos might be the best book I’ve written. I know I’ve made that statement before about past works, but why write if you don’t grow as a writer? It is the sharpest expression of my writing, the most precise balance of atmosphere and philosophy I’ve yet to craft. If you have followed my work before, you will find all the hallmarks of my storytelling—deep worldbuilding, morally complex characters, and a slow, creeping dread that lingers long after the last page.

But if you are new to my books, this is a great place to begin. The Order of Thanatos series welcomes all.

How You Can Support the Release

  • Pre-order now: Every pre-order helps boost visibility and ensures you get your copy the moment it releases.
  • Share the book: Word of mouth is powerful. If you know someone who loves dark fantasy, tell them about The Novice of Thanatos. If you read it and like it, spread the word.
  • Leave a review: Whether on Amazon, Goodreads, or your personal blog, reviews help indie authors more than anything else.
  • Join the conversation: I’ve already delved into some of the lore in my blog, but in the coming weeks, I’ll share even more behind-the-scenes insights, answer reader questions, and discuss the book’s themes. I’m currently writing book 2, The Monk of Thanatos, which I hope to release this year. So, check back for updates.

In two days, the gates of Thanatos open. Will you step beyond the Threshold?

Scott Austin Tirrell loves dark speculative fiction, conjuring isolated worlds where ancient mysteries, the raw power of nature, and the paranormal entwine. His work is steeped in the arcane, drawing from the forgotten corners of history and the unsettling grasp of the supernatural. With a style shaped by Clive Barker, Frank Herbert, and Joe Abercrombie, he crafts narratives that pull ordinary, flawed souls into the extraordinary, where reality frays, shadows lengthen, and the unknown whispers from the void. He has self-published eight books, with Koen set to come out in 2025 under Grendel Press. Residing in Boston with his wife, he draws inspiration from the region’s haunted past and spectral folklore. Scott invites readers to step beyond the veil and into his worlds, where every tale descends into the deeper, darker truths of the human condition.
